Moving day

So, if you hadn't noticed from the title, we moved our office today.  Thankfully it was in the same building, just a different floor... but still.  I didn't have to go in to work until 11 this morning (which was nice) but once I got there I spent the next six hours going up and down the elevator hauling stuff.  So there really wasn't much design stuff today... just moving.  Lots and lots of moving.  And by the time I left at five we were only like... two thirds of the way done. Woo! So... sadly, that's really all there is to report.  I still feel really inadequate, like I don't talk enough... I think Harry thinks I'm an extreme introvert 'cause I'm always too nervous to say anything.  Hopefully I'll get better... yep.  That's all.

Running around like a chicken with its head cut off

Today was... weird.  But good.  I started off the day by meeting Harry at another client's house.  This project is a four-story townhouse.  It's still in the beginning stages though.  I got there and got to talk to the client(?) as well as the contractors who were working on the construction.  I also got to see a massive finish schedule.  Everything in the house is custom... wow.  Also!  The floor in the bathroom is this gorgeous white onyx with a blue backing, so it looks like blue onyx.  Amazing.

Then we headed to the penthouse where I supervised the installation on Friday.  I got to meet the client (she was a doll) and we had to supervise a bit while some guys tried to hang paintings over this curtain thing... it was interesting.  And people freaked out a bit.  So basically it turned into a crisis... I couldn't really do anything so Harry sent me back to the office.  I spent the rest of the afternoon working on bathroom stuff (still) and starting work on the garage-turned-living area.  I think it'll be cool?  I hope so.

So Harry's been really awesome.  I still don't really know what's going on, but he keeps taking me along to places and having me help him with things, so that's good.  I think I'm getting the hang of it... but I still have a lot to learn.

Today was really not exciting at all

It is so hot.  Like, seriously.  It's disgusting. Also it's super stuffy in the office that we're moving out of.  But.  We got to visit the new office.  It's on the top floor of the building and everything up there already looks so much nicer than on the sixth floor.  The office is a lot bigger and super airy and cool and bright and I love it!  Plus, the view out the window is incredible.  We get to move in on Thursday.  Woo!

I was super tired all day today.  I think I almost fell asleep about ten times.  So I spent all day doing stuff for the bathroom and trying to find a specific exterior sconce online with no info about it but a picture.  Yay!

Oh, and don't worry, found out today that Harry knows Hugh Panaro aka the Phantom of the Opera.  He said if I would have told him I was going he could have gotten me backstage... WHAT.  No fair.  Now I'm sad because I didn't know.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if I got carpal tunnel.  Just sayin'.

Escaping the city

Yes, we escaped today... by going to the beach!  There's a beach in New York? Yep!  Jones Beach on Long Island!  We left at about 10:30 and got there at about 12:30.  It was really crowded but the beach was big enough that there it didn't feel crowded. It was so nice to just escape the city and actually see the horizon.  No buildings, no cars, no nasty cigarette smoke, just beach.  Lovely.  But... you know, I now have stupid tanlines.  From shorts and a t-shirt rolled up to my shoulders.  Yippee!  Not really.  But yes, we just relaxed for Memorial Day.  Then I came home while Dani and her mom went to Newsies (which I'll be seeing in a couple of weeks).  It's still nasty-hot here... but there's really nothing I can do.  Yay for living on the top floor of a little apartment building with awful ventilation and a window A/C unit that doesn't work.

What time is it? Bloggin' time!

Yep, so today was super chill.  We went to the singles' ward at nine this morning and for some reason I was so tired.  It was weird. Anyway, Dani and her mom ditched me (not really, they just had tickets to another show but I couldn't go 'cause I'm already low on money) so I went home, changed clothes, and headed out to explore the city.  Where did I end up?  Barnes and Noble.  Of course.  I spent like two hours in there just enjoying the fact that it felt so familiar and it smelled like new books.  I ended up buying three books (Passion, A Great and Terrible Beauty, and Incarceron) and a bookkmark.  And some chocolate!  Then I took a walk up 5th Avenue to Central Park where I spent about 2 hours just relaxing and sketching and reading.  It was really nice out today (meaning not too humid) so it was nice to just sit outside on the grass and relax.  Then I went home and... fell asleep.  Yep.  And that was my day.  Exciting, huh?

Adventures in Responsibility

Today was... interesting.  I started by going to a client's penthouse (it's gorgeous by the way) where they were installing some sparkly white and silver carpet.  I had to be there at 9 (half an hour earlier than normal... blech) and Jen and I basically just sat there and supervised.  Then Jen had to leave for the office for a couple of hours, and guess who was left in charge?  Me. Yep.  Little old Lindsay supervising an installation all by herself.  I wasn't terrified at all (yes I was).  But I survived!  Jen came back (a little later than I'd hoped) and then she sent me down to the middle of crazytown to pick up some postcards.  I say "crazytown" because it was down by Canal Street, which is near Chinatown.  This specific intersection happened to be the intersection of like 3 bridges and an entrance to a tunnel or something so there were like a MILLION cars.  Blech.  I left to go down there at about 1:45, and by the time I got back home it was 3:20.  Yes, I spent and hour and a half traveling all the way downtown and back to pick up some postcards. Woot.

When I got home I basically just crashed.  Dani wasn't home yet so I just kind of took a nap.  Then she came home and we went to Johnny Rocket's for dinner and it was delicious.

So... yep!  First week: done!  Five more to go.  I hope I'll get the hang of it soon because I still feel like I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.  No work on Monday because of Memorial Day (woo) so it's a long weekend!  More on our adventures once they actually happen :D

Ugh. And then NOT ugh.

It's been a long day.  And to make it worse, it was rainy/not rainy/humid all day.  Basically I just had my umbrella in my hand at all times because you never know when it would just decide to pour.  We started off by going to gold lady's house.  We were there for like an hour before some crisis at another installation brought us back to the office. There I got to finally meet cute little Samson! He's adorable.  But yes, I spent more time today on the bathroom (I'm intimidated...) and now Harry wants me to work on this garage-turned-living room... EEEK.  I was kind of feeling bad about myself... I feel like I don't know anything. Boo.  But I'll survive.

On the way home I got a call from Dani to meet in Times Square for dinner.  We went down to Little Italy (in the rain) and went to a place called Da Nico where we met our new favorite person, Adam.  He's an Italian waiter, and he was basically flirting with us the whole time.  We ordered pasta. We got bread, salad, pizza, pasta, scones with powdered sugar, and fresh fruit. I love Italian people.  He kept saying ciao, bella and mamma mia.  It was adorable.  Then we got a picture with him (of course) and he was being all charming and funny.  One time a lady asked how long the wait would be for 3 people and he was like, "Uh, 30 seconds."  He even counted down the seconds.  We laughed our heads off. I don't know why it was so funny, but it was.  Als, Dani gave him her number.  Why?  Who knows.  She's married! And he actually called her and left a message: "Hi Dani, this is Adam from Da Nico's.  I'm just calling you so you have my number... bye."  BAHAHA.  We freaked out and laughed and it was awesome.

So ya, today started out not that great but ended awesomely.  Now we're just chillin' at home and getting ready for our short days tomorrow. Woo!  Here are some more pics! ('Cause I finally took some more.)

Hump Day

Well, it's Wednesday, which means the week is halfway done!

Today was just a chill stay-in-the-office kind of day.  It was just me and Jen until Harry finally got there at about two.  Basically I just spent all day working on bathroom ideas (which I'm kind of excited about).  But I did get to go run errands.  Yay for walking around in the humidity for like an hour!  I really felt like an intern though... going to the bank, picking up paper and ink and Staples, buying lunch... heh heh.  Also, it's been super hot and muggy all day... blech. Not my fave.  Oh, and with two and a half hours left of work, my mouse died. Yippee.  So I got to attempt to do CAD/Photoshop/Illustrator/everything else I was doing without a mouse.  It was not okay.  They let me off an hour early so I could go drop of this awkwardly large poster at the D&D.  And... I caved and stopped at Dylan's on the way home.  Go ahead, judge me.  I got some candy (duh) and some on-sale pink pants.  Yep.

I'm just tired and absolutely starving.  Food time, methinks.

The Second of the Days

Today was actually really fun.  I started the day by meeting Jen at a client's place.  They're designing an office for a lady who really likes gold (and cats!).  We got to go supervise while movers prepared to install new carpet and such.  Then we got a muffin and headed over to the D&D.  It's a lot of fun to go there when you actually have a purpose (unlike going there on the design trip and getting lost somewhere on the sixth floor until you finally run into Kathryn and realized you're both lost).  We sped through a few different show rooms collecting samples and such, which was kinda fun.  By the time we finally left it was already like 1:30.  We got back to the office (after a smoothie) and immediately started to work again.  Harry gave me measurements for his teeny tiny bathroom (holy moly it's small) and I drew it up in CAD.  Then he gave me free reign to kind of come up with my own design. What? It's kind of really awesome.  But I'm afraid he'll hate everything I pick... I dunno. We'll see, I guess.

So overall, I'm liking everything so far.  I think this'll be a lot of fun :D

Day 1 (exciting title, I know)

Oh man.  It's been a long day.

It started normally... then I woke up.  And I was a big bundle of nerves.  To make myself feel better I spent lots of time getting ready and looking super cute for the first day- favorite skirt, comfy sandals, curly hair. Then I go outside, and what do I see? Rain.  And lots of it.  I mean, it was pouring.  I practically ran to the subway.  About ten minutes into my ride I get an email from Harry saying he'll be late and to not come in until ten (instead of 9:30). Okay... so I get off at Times Square and it's only about nine.  Yay for standing under a temporary metal awning outside Walgreens for half an hour!  It was funny because about ten other people were doing the same thing I was to get out of the rain.

Then I finally got to go to the office.  I arrived feeling like a drowned rat.  Nonetheless, Harry and Jen welcomed me right in (despite having to be terrified at my scraggly appearance).  I spent the first little bit getting acquainted with his work (through a few binders full of published rooms he's done) and his office (just by sitting there and taking it all in).  Let me just say, Autumn wasn't kidding when she said he collects a ton of random stuff.  I love it!  I've never seen so many awesome little knick knacks in one place.  Plus he has about 50 antique Christmas tree stands. I was expecting to see his cute little dog Samson today, but sadly he wasn't there.  Apparently the little guy really didn't like the rain.  Also, Harry just plugged in his iPod and we got to listen to music all day.  I'm totally okay with this.

Anyway.  I spent the day in the office doing, well, intern things.  I drew up a garage plan in CAD, cataloged the books along his wall (he has a ton of books covered in random little objects, and the whole shelf probably hasn't been dusted ever), helped him set up his new iPad, ate a delicious sandwich from Lenny's for lunch (grilled chicken, lettuce, mozzarella, onions, and red peppers), and then, after 7 or so hours of that, we went to the opening for an Elle Decor showhouse down on 28th street...

Well we started by going to 28th street. It turns out the showhouse was back up on 53rd... whoops.  Anyway, it was crowded and hot, but it was cool I guess :)  Then we headed home (finally).

Oh, and also! Harry's letting me help him redesign his bathroom! SOO excited :D

Overall it was a good day.  Long and tiring, but good. I think I'm gonna like it.  I'm meeting Jen tomorrow (she's Harry's assistant designer) up the street to go to the D&D and such, so I'm excited!

I cataloged all these books today! Yay me.  It took like 2 hours... but it was really cool looking at all the little trinkets he had on those shelves!

The day before the end of the world... aka when I start my internship

Well, today was kind of nice.  We just relaxed and mentally prepared ourselves for our first day on the job tomorrow (scary!).  First we went to church.  Finally, something familiar!  Everyone was really welcoming (and we had to stand up in Sacrament meeting with about 20 other visitors) and the building was gorgeous.  Then we came home, changed, and went for lunch in Little Italy.  Homemade lasanga? Don't mind if I do!  Then!  We took the tram over to Roosevelt Island (you know, the one in Spiderman where he has to choose whether to save all the people or to save MJ) and it was amazing to look across the water to the city.  Gorgeous!  The rest of the night we literally did nothing.  But we did watch Pirates of the Caribbean.  And eat popcorn, grapes, and chips and salsa.  I promise we don't just eat all the time.  Anyway, I'm really nervous about tomorrow... but thanks to Autumn, I'm feeling a little better about it!  Eep!  I guess I'll check in tomorrow!
